How to look fabulous on a Mediterranean holiday: makeup tips from Chanel makeup artist Anna Payne
1. I spend much of my summer in the Mediterranean, Provence and then Sicily. It tends to be scorching hot, and I usually keep my makeup to a minimum as it shows more when in the sun and the heat. What is your trick to keep summer make-up almost invisible yet effective?
'Less is always more in the summer. Your skin tends to look better anyway. You have a bit of colour in your face, and you look healthy, so you want to embrace this instead of covering it.
'The best makeup is all about building thin layers and blending them, I never want anything to sit on top of the skin, I want it to become part of it. I will often start with a bronzer. You’ll find that by adding colour before the foundation you will use less and create thinner layers. I couldn’t live without CHANEL LES BEIGES HEALTHY GLOW BRONZING CREAM. I usually use the darker shade on everyone, just more sparingly on paler skin. The darker formula has a really beautiful undertone to it that looks so natural.
'Having added the bronzer, I’ll add a little blush. I love the hint of pink that skin gets in the summer. There’s something fresh about it. My current favourite is CHANEL LES BEIGES WATER-FRESH BLUSH in warm pink. I’ll tap this on to the cheek bones, adding what’s left on my finger to the bridge of the nose.
'At this point I go in with my foundation. When I’m trying to create a transparency to the skin, as I am here, my first port of call is CHANEL LES BEIGES WATER-FRESH TINT. It evens out the skin and gives a uniform look, but you can still see the texture through it. Don’t apply this everywhere, just to the areas that you feel need evening out. Dust a little powder down the centre of the face and you should have a beautiful summer skin.
'I love to add a few freckles in the summer too or enhance those that are already there. I do this using Freck Beauty.'
2. With the heat, how about sweat-proof makeup – and how to keep it from sliding off?
'Again, it’s all about thin layers and the key to this is to not overload products. When I’m prepping my skin in the summer, I’ll add a serum but replace moisturiser with my sunscreen. It’s important to find a sunscreen that has enough UV protection but is also thin enough to prevent your makeup from sliding off. CHANEL UV ESSENTIEL SPF50 is great but I’ve also just discovered Supergoop (Re)setting Powder and it’s perfect for topping up your sunscreen when you’re already wearing makeup and reducing shine at the same time.'
3. Any tricks to even out a sunburn?
'First, wear sunscreen, but if you do burn then get as much moisture into the skin as possible. I love CHANEL BODY L'HUILE JASMIN for this. Next, buff bronzer into the skin to even out the contrast – the CHANEL PETIT PINCEAU KABUKI BRUSH works perfectly for this.'
4. For makeup when on a Mediterranean island, the key question is for eyelashes. I would love to keep my eyelashes long and curly all day while swimming in the sea. Could waterproof mascara do the trick? If yes, which one? And how would you take it off in the evening? If not, would lash extensions be your alternative?
'I personally don’t have the discipline to keep up with eyelash extensions but if you do then they’re great, especially on holiday. Just make sure they’re done well and look natural.
'I’m a big fan of Revitalash – it really works! And before I go on holiday, I’ll dye my lashes which gives my eyes a bit of extra definition for the pool. However, sometimes I do like to add a little extra oomph to my lashes so I will use CHANEL INIMITABLE WATERPROOF. It’s quite a light formula so still looks natural. Waterproof mascara can be a nightmare to take off but CHANEL DÉMAQUILLANT YEUX INTENSE is always up to the job.'
