Exclusive Interview: Bridget Riley on the significance of the stripe
Culture Whisper caught up with pioneering Op Art modernist, Bridget Riley, to ask her about her 50-year fascination with stripes
Bridget Riley can be seen as the reluctant queen of Op Art , having often expressed discomfort about being elided with the movement.
In her latest retrospective at David Zwirner Art Gallery, Riley returns to one of her most sustained motifs for creating optical illusions– the stripe. Recently Culture Whisper caught up with her and asked the killer question : Why stripes and why now? Here is what she had to say…
“I have been working with stripes as a pictorial agent since the painting that starts this exhibition [1961] to now, and it is a marvellous vehicle for colour because it’s very neutral, and you can work into it and work into it and work into it. It’s extremely malleable, strangely enough. Using the line once was not - but it is!”
