Mozart's most dazzling opera returns in the guise of a lavish 1970s house party.
The young lovers brought together by cunning Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia are now an older and disillusioned married couple: the countess pines for their earlier happiness, while the count chases the young domestic staff. Cue Figaro, who is not going to give up his bride-to-be to his lecherous boss. It's time to catch the old goat out, and give both couples a second chance. In Michael Grandage's spirited and colourful production, designed by Christopher Oram, Davide Luciano plays Figaro and Rosa Feola his betrothed, Susanna, with Gyula Orendt and Golda Schultz as the count and countess, and Susan Bickley and John Graham-Hall as hangers-on with a secret that will wrongfoot everyone.
