Tucked away on an unlikely street behind Spitalfields, cocktail wizardry is happening. Descend the stairs on Wentworth Street, peek behind a curtain and you will find the Discount Suit Company. They just revamped their cocktail menu and it is truly great – with something for everyone and a menu which cleverly directs you to drinks you might not have heard of by noting shared characteristics with more familiar concoctions.
If you’re a hardened Old Fashioned drinker, why not try the Conference Call: a blend of whiskey, smoked and salted maple syrup, walnut bitters and toasted orange peel. Or, if you’re partial to a French 75, why not switch it up and try the Carrier Pigeon: a delicate balance of white rum, lemon, honey, lavender and prosecco. Our favourite, though, is probably the Love Potion, which arrives in a charming bottle to share between two, and certainly gives everything in the room a rosy glow by the time you reach the bottom.
The staff are welcoming and knowledgable, and always happy to create you a custom cocktail, based on what you love or would like to try. They are even patient enough teach you the pronunciation of 'Bán Poitín' ('bawn potcheen' apparently) – a mysterious Irish spirit found in their lethal Kneecapper cocktail. There is also a weekly changing cheese board from Neal’s Yard to balance all the booze.
We love the Discount Suit Company – it's the perfect place to go for an intimate drink or to catch up with friends. Just a stone’s throw from Spitalfields and Liverpool Street, but a world away from the commuter madness.
