What is it about Magdalena Kozena’s (Carmen)
voice that makes it so enchanting? She is among the purest, lightest, most
otherworldly of mezzos, capable of transporting to audience away from the
concert hall entirely. For Wigmore Hall’s
2015/16 season, she is performing a set of recital in celebration of her
talents. Although the whole series is tantalizing, this concert is a
particularly thrilling proposition. Kozena will perform alongside her husband Sir Simon Rattle, the Berlin
Philharmonic chief conductor, in his first ever appearance at the venue as a
pianist in company. Six outstanding
musicians from Berlin, London and Bern will join them to create a unique
ensemble.

In line with the rarity of the occasion,
Kozena and Rattle have prepared a startlingly mixed programme. The night begins
with Chausson’s Chanson perpetuelle (1898), the symbolist composer’s last completed
work and a hugely dramatic showpiece. It will be followed by works from Brahms, Ravel, Strauss and Stravinsky, several of which respond to
the works of Shakespeare. Then, for the final stretch, Kozena will sing the
music of her Bohemian homeland, with Janacek’s
Rikadla (1926) and a selection
of Dvorak’s vocal works, including
four of the playful Gypsy Songs (1880).
