Based (very loosely) on the true story of Zarafa the giraffe, who was given as a present from the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt Mehmet Ali Pasha to Charles X of France, this glorious animated children's film follows a young a ten-year-old orphaned Sudanese boy Maki, sold into slavery, who attempts to protect the young giraffe from those who would exploit him.
Directed by French-Belgian director Rémi Bezançon, the story introduces children gently to adult themes of jealousy, control, slavery and even alcohol abuse. This beautiful animation in which the Jungle Book meets nineteenth-centry hedonistic France, will make the heart melt. It's little wonder Zarafa was nominated for Best Animated Film in the Cezar awards.
