To mark 100 years since the birth of one of the most important British furniture designers of the 20th century, sleek retro and contemporary design store twentytwentyone has commissioned a new series of 'Reclining Chairs'.
What's so special about the Robin Day chair?
The simple polypropylene chair was designed by Robin Day in a wave of innovation post World War I and is thought to be one of the most significant moments in mass-production for Britain. These days we can find the chairs lining airports, hospitals and canteens around the world, with 50 million still in circulation and half a million made each year. This is post-war design, built to last. The glamorous young designer in the 1950s was so popular he was commissioned to create the seating for the Royal Festival Hall in London and appeared in dozens of magazine spreads with his wife, textile designer Lucienne Day.
twentytwentyone furniture highlights
Now this iconic piece of furniture is getting a reboot by some of our favourite designers, including BarberOsgerby, Tom Dixon and Ilse Crawford. Each contributor has upholstered their chair with a unique textile design, embracing Day's original design while injecting their own creative spirit.
Pay homage to one of Britain's greatest designers this summer at twentytwentyone's showroom in Clerkenwell.
