In Marylebone this summer, Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton will be opening his 6th London restaurant in partnership with The Social Company: Social Wine & Tapas.
London tapas meets fine wine
Laure Patry, who has worked with Atherton for over a decade, will be the mastermind behind their wine list, offering a global selection with an emphasis on championing small growers. Social Wine and Tapas will make use of the much-lauded Coravin system, which enables the bar to extract wine from bottles, but without interrupting the natural ageing process by removing the cork. This means a wide variety of prestigious vintages and rare wines will be available, unusually, by the glass.
Wine for wine Lovers
Atherton is evidently aiming at creating a wine bar for true wine lovers, with every waiter being a trained sommelier, well versed in the nuances of the vintages on offer.
Tapas restaurant London
The restaurant space itself will include a wine tasting table for up to 10 guests, for those who want to sample a broad range of The Social Company's curated selection. A shop will sit beside the bar and restaurant, and here, too, knowledgeable staff will be on hand to impart some of their wisdom of the vine.
On the menu: Spanish Restaurants; London sourcing
No less attention has been paid to the culinary side of the venture, with a tapas style menu under head chef Frankie Van Loo. The food will be Spanish in origin but made with the best of British produce, bringing the best of Spanish restaurants London has seen together with the freshest of ingredients.
Tapas in London with an eclectic twist
Stand out offerings from the menu include a delightfully eclectic ‘seafood and rabbit Spanish rice’ and their luxurious take on the classic cheese toastie, with jamon, Manchego and truffle. Ever the perfect companion to wine, a seasonal selection of cheese and charcuterie will be offered alongside the menu of tapas dishes.
The interiors have been designed by Russell Sage, the team behind Dishoom and Grain Store, decked out in rich green leather and dark wood to evoke that air of reserved opulence that 1920s-style wine bars do so well. Social Wine & Tapas looks to be a brilliant addition to the array of great restaurants near Marylebone High Street. We're already salivating.
