For only four weekends, the extraordinary, innovative teams behind the Disappearing Dining Club and Background Bars have combined forces with scary creative potential to foster Swallows and Amazons, an exclusive dining and drinking event in one of Southwark’s most historic market spaces. Combining the rich history of the venue with the tastes of contemporary London, Swallows and Amazons looks to be one of the most unique places to eat in London: the perfect way to enjoy summer in an unusual location.
The LASSCO Ropewalk is best known for The Maltby Street Market, a gloriously old fashioned artisan produce and antique market that caters for the increasingly foody clientele in the area, spilling out from Borough and winding through the knotty side streets of the Southbank. Swallows and Amazons will bring the night to the Ropewalk, and with the evocative soundtrack of 50s Rock 'n' Roll the heady metronome, the antique laden, souk-like tributaries of the market will be alive with barbecue smells and summery cocktails.
Background Bars, the team behind the award winning Night/Summer Tales, bring their seasonal nous to early summer in Southwark.
The Swallows Spritz sounds like a must have, a decadent and exotic Prosecco based cocktail augmented with orange bitters and passion fruit liqueurs, while ice-cold beers and impressive summer sparkling are on offer in the Eisenhower Drinks Lounge (built using panelling from US Naval HQ, where D-Day was planned) to unwind after a hot July day at work.
The DDC BBQ will be served throughout the night, bringing the burgeoning deep-South barbecue menu to East London. The Ropewalk will smell like New Orleans, with Grilled Ox Heart, Chicken Thigh and Heart Skewers, Cajun spiced Pork Neck Steaks all freshened by exotic salads of Rice, Mango, Coriander and Coconut and the signature Green Pea, Baby Gem, Goat’s Cheese and Mint. Alongside the barbecue range will be Potted Meats, Pickles and Breads from DDC, E5 Bakehouse and St John: A summer menu to put the Great British Barbecue to shame; out with raw sausages and burnt burgers, in with slow roasted Louisiana-Rub meat.
The Disappearing Dining Club have thrown award winning exclusive parties in locations you would never associate with food, from lighthouses to launderettes and railway arches to antique shops.
This is set to be their extravaganza, with the drink selection from Background Bars being a perfect supplement to DDC’s typically opulent menu.
Swallows and Amazons is open every Friday and Saturday Night from June 19th to July 11th. Tickets are £26 and include a welcome Woodford Reserve Mint Julep and a light dinner range from the barbecue and beyond.
