Acclaimed Cuban outfit Irakere make a triumphant return to Ronnie Scott’s to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
One of the most influential groups in Latin jazz, the 11-piece are known for their irrepressible energy and innovative approach, blending traditional Cuban folk songs and Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, rock and funk, and for cranking out fiendishly complex, but thrillingly danceable grooves, with help from a thunderous array of percussion instruments.
Led by piano virtuoso and Cuban master Chucho Valdés, Irakere was a rite of passage for many of the greatest Cuban musicians of the past few decades, including trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera.
The band’s packed-out shows at Ronnie’s back in the 1980s are the stuff of legend and it’s fitting that they should choose the venue as the place to mark their 40th. Grab a ticket, order a mojito from the bar and join the party.
