We can’t wait for the release of Her, a film that has already scooped three golden globe nominations – including best picture, best actor and best screenplay – as well as 6 critics choice nominations and a host of other awards. Written, directed and produced by Spike Jonze, (Being John Malvovich, Where the Wild Things Are, Adaptation), the film is an unconventional love story about a lonely man who falls for his computer. With a star cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlet Johansson, Amy Adams and Rooney Mara, and music composed by Arcade Fire, this is a film that has got everyone talking.
The story follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), who makes his living by writing touching, personal letters for others. Heartbroken while recovering from the recent end of his marriage to Catherine (played by Rooney Mara), Theodore is intrigued by a new advanced operating system, personalised for each user. It is through this system that he meets Samantha - voiced by Scarlet Johansson – and a deep and loving relationship begins to develop.
The film showcases Jonze’s trademark flair for imagination, humour and originality. It is a modern-day story, one that asks questions about how we relate to technology, but it is also a timeless tale of love and yearning. Jonze recently described how the heart of the film was about the need for intimacy and the things inside us that prevent us from connecting - feelings which have existed ‘for as long as we’ve existed.’
With stunning visuals, a great soundtrack and brilliant, heartfelt, performances this is one of the big Hollywood movies that we think is a must watch for 2014.
