Turner Prize nominee Yinka Shonibare MBE has been making waves in the contemporary art world ever since that famous ship in a bottle on Trafalgar Square launched into our lives. After being awarded his Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2005, the quirky London-based artist took the letters as part of his everyday name. His varied and playful work is currently on display at the William Morris Gallery, and his fantastically flamboyant series Diary of a Victorian Dandy can be found in the V&A Staying Power exhibition. This curious character looks at the contradictions of the Establishment and its relationship with colonialism and class, navigated through his own Nigerian heritage.
Shonibare will discuss his work from the early paintings in the 1990s to his latest ventures into costume and embodying a Victorian dandy. There'll also be a chance to hear about his public sculptures, performance and photography, as well as his studio project space, Guest Projects.
