Thomas Joshua Cooper photography exhibition
Scattered Waters – Sources Streams Rivers features a series of images by landscape photographer, Thomas Joshua Cooper. Born in California in 1946, Cooper moved to Scotland in 1982 and took up the role as founding Head of Photography at the Glasgow School of Art. Scattered Waters is almost like a love letter from Cooper to his Scottish home, with a series of photographs taken by Cooper over the past 30 years as he explored the wild landscapes of Scotland and the rivers that traverse the country.
Thomas Joshua Cooper biography
The photographs of Scattered Waters conform to a vow Cooper made many years ago: to only photograph landscape; to only use black and white film; to only use one camera and one lens; and to only ever make one exposure. His unforgiving philosophy of ‘one picture, one chance’ meant that capturing a single image was gruelling and required months of preparation.
This exhibition at the Fleming Collection, London comprises some of the most striking examples of landscape photography to be found and certainly offers a thought-provoking contrast to the world of instant digital photography today!
