A new exhibition in London by Graham Little opens at the Alison Jacques Gallery, with a selection of gouaches from the last two years on display. You might know Scottish artist Graham Little from his exhibition at Camden Arts Centre back in 2001 and work in established collections such as MoMA, New York and Zabludowicz Collection, London.
These works at Alison Jacques’ London mark a continuation of Little’s ongoing interest in portraits of lone female figures, inspired by vintage fashion magazines. Focusing specifically on the figure’s relationship with their environment, Little is able to capture an intriguing ambiguity between the subject and their setting. Each woman is caught transfixed in a moment of introspection, somehow at odds with the environment in which they are shown. Look out for Untitled (Kitchen) 2014 where Little contrasts the bleak geometry of the kitchen with the soft features of the woman’s face and her flowing apron.
With their eerie serenity Little’s paintings at this London contemporary art Gallery will likely linger on your minds long after your visit.
