Award-winning New York based artist, Penelope Umbrico, dazzles The Photographers’ Gallery Media Wall this winter with her new project Sun/Screen. The exhibition comprises of a mesmerizing array of re-photographed images of the sun, found online and snapped from a computer screen using an iPhone camera. As the two digital photographs converge, their superimposed pixels create hypnotic optical illusions – shimmering and hazy moiré patterns that themselves evoke a wonderful sense of heat and light.
Penelope Umbrico’s Sun/Screen forms part of her wider exploration of the ever-increasing production and consumption of photographic images online. At The Photographers’ Gallery, London Umbrico questions pop culture’s obsession with sunset images, and sets out create a dialogue between natural and simulated light.
Presented alongside Sun/Screen is Never-ending Sunset (Second Life), a continuation of Umbrico’s discussion on simulated light. This visual fantasy shows what the perfect Penelope Umbrico sunset might be, as it continually descends over an artificial sea.
If you’re looking for something a bit different to brighten up your day this winter, Penelope Umbrico’s extraordinary images are a must-see.
