Down an unassuming street in Furzedown, the border between Tooting and Streatham, is a tiny café-cum-deli, Cut the Mustard. Next door to local favourite, the Naked Loaf bakery, it's a novel addition to the area, promising seasonal food and unpretentious flavours.
The staff are friendly, obliging and can adapt the menu to suit any taste. Their scrambled egg is cooked to perfection and can be supplemented by a healthy serving of avocado. Other options on the breakfast menu include Eggs Benedict, Royale or Florentine, which Cut the Mustard's chefs poach perfectly. Their artesian coffee is also worth a mention: it's made in customised vintage roasters, and the deli work with local suppliers Volcano Coffee Works to support the South London community.
But there’s more to this café than brunch (although we should mention that they also do a full English, complete with black pudding). On a Friday or Saturday night they also offer a dinner menu, and are licensed, so guests can take their pick of beers from local microbreweries. Of their suppers the pumpkin, sage and nutmeg risotto and roast cod with celeriac, apple and thyme sound delightful, plus a selection of cheese and charcuterie boards to sample. Cut the Mustard will also be running an in-house supperclub from the 5th of December, with a menu of smoked mackerel, fennel and orange, braised ox cheek, mash and beets, and a salted caramel brownie with rum chantilly.
During the day, diners can enjoy foccacia sandwiches—salt beef, gherkin and mustard being the pick of the bunch—and, with cakes a plenty for dessert, plus their aforementioned mouth-watering brownie, you could well end up having to be rolled home.
