No more dry supermarket scotch eggs. This beautifully simple street food concept brings foodies a lovely yolky treat, organic eggs enveloped in warm free-range sausage, and the difference is truly striking.
University duo Dominic and Oli conceived of Scotchtails, a new brand of Artisan scotch eggs, in 2013. Their creations greet eaters with a light and crumbly exterior, and proceed through a succulent meaty layer to a soft yolk-filled core that will have scotch-egg lovers and cynics alike scrambling to Borough market to try them.
Having moved from Berwick St, the pair or on the rise. Seeking to ‘bring the scotch egg bang up to date’ the team put a high emphasis on quality ingredients, using locally sourced Burford Browns with a rich, vibrant yolk. Their meats are always free range – and what a range of meats there are. They’ve got a selection of staple flavours, and are happy to take suggestions. From traditional British flavours like rich black pudding or cumberland sausage to Spanish chorizo and lamb & mint, their eggs never cease to excite the tastebuds. There are also a range of interesting vegetarian options: their Mushroom & Sage, Beetroot & Lentil, or sweet potato falafel enclosed eggs will have veggie Londoners salivating at the prospect.
Each succulent morsel is lovingly hand-made by the pair in Hackney, and cooked to order each day. The warm scotch eggs are supplied to hungry workers in a kraft cardboard meal box, along with hot and crispy sweet potato fries, on a bed of rocket and with a choice of condiments. Try their spiced plum and apple chutney, chimichurri, or caramelized red onion marmalade. Yum.
