The Plot
When an enigmatic Shepherd appears in court, King Roger ignores the advice of the Church officials to punish him and instead allows him to speak. After descriptions of his hedonistic way of life seduce those who listen, the Shepherd initiates a euphoric dance before leading his new followers (including Roger’s wife, Roxana) away, leaving Roger conflicted and alone, tormented by his decision and awaiting the sunrise.
The Score
Including soaring melodies, piquant dissonances and moments of drama, this opera is richly detailed. Using sensual harmonies to capture the allure of the orient, Szymanowski’s score also incorporates material inspired by ancient Greece and the exotic cultures of the past. Szymanowski combines these elements to create a distinctly personal voice, transporting the listener to a sumptuous world of myth and magic.
The Team
A new production by the critically acclaimed director Kasper Holten promises a moving exploration of Roger’s conflict between head and heart. With a cast including a mixture of established professionals and up-and-coming names, and a score which will showcase the talents of the superlative Royal Opera House Orchestra, Król Roger contains all the ingredients for an unforgettable evening.
