Lykke Li, music
Londoners have developed a certain fondness for all things Scandinavian, and Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li, with her fiercely brilliant songcraft, has proven no exception. The indie artist creates huge, painful love songs with booming percussion and deliciously sad melodies. Can there be a more devastating song than 'Possibility'?
Lykke Li, albums
Lykke Li’s latest album I Never Learn (2014) came out in May to great acclaim, following 2011’s Wounded Rhymes (from which the relentlessly catchy ‘I Follow Rivers’ was named the UK’s ‘2012 Festival Anthem’). It’s a huge, echoey, dramatic heartbreak of a record: with spacious production. There is none of the naïve playfulness that informed tracks like ‘Little Bit’ and 'Dance Dance Dance'. In the title track 'I Never Learn', Li’s (her real name is Li Lykke Timotej Svensson) exquisitely spectral vocals fade in and out, reaching their height in a surge of otherworldly strings. 'Love Me Like I’m Not Made Of Stone' hears where her voice soars over a single quiet guitar line. With beguiling sincerity, the 27 year old opens with the lines, ‘There’s a heart I cannot hide, there’s a beat I can’t deny’.
Lykke Li, tour and support
The pared down accompaniment intensifies the experience and it should be a real treat to hear live. Eliot Sumner (I Blame Coco, previously) will be providing the support at the Hammersmith Apollo London. Sting’s daughter, previously writing under the names of both Coco and I Blame Coco (Caesar and Never Be being two of her top songs), produces percussion heavy songs with haunting vocas. Eliot Sumner and Lykke Li together should not be missed. Don’t let this one slip by, go and be captivated by these magical songstresses.
